DO I NEED A PIANO?

Yes, you do need a piano right from the beginning.

All pupils need access to their own instrument.  Your lesson is just a small part of learning to play- it's your practice time at home that really makes the difference.

The tutor books I use all explore the full range of the piano from the very start, so you would need either an acoustic piano or a digital piano with around 88 weighted or semi-weighted keys.

Beware pianos offered for free.  Quite often these are only fit to dump.  It's always good to take the advice of a piano tuner if you are considering a secondhand instrument.
